ABOUT SNOW PLOWS

Updated 1/16/03

If you think your snow plow is a Dozer blade, think again !

These dents in this plow are from plowing a parking lot that was in bad shape. Loose asphalt everywhere, and large holes in the lots surface caused the damage.

THE NUTS HOLDING THE COILS ON, SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH BRASS NUTS. NEVER SEIZE SHOULD BE APPLIED TO THE THREADS TOO. THIS REDUCES THE RISK OF SNAPPING THE STUDS WHEN REMOVING THE NUTS TO SERVICE THE COILS. ON THIS MEYER E-47 PUMP, THE "A" COIL CONTROLS LOWER, AND THE "B" CONTROLS RAISE, AND THE "C" CONTROLS RIGHT ANGLE. THERE IS NO VALVE USED TO ANGLE THE PLOW LEFT.

WHEN FULL, THE FLUID LEVEL SHOULD BE 1" - 1-1/2" BELOW THE TOP OF THE RESERVOIR. NOT EASY TO CHECK. I USE A SMALL PIECE OF 12ga WIRE. IT WORKS WELL, THE FLUID CLINGS TO THE WIRES INSULATION. BE SURE TO MAKE A LOOP OR A KNOT IN THE WIRE, SO IT CAN'T FALL IN.

Here you can see the reservoir drain plug, and the nuts that hold the 2 filters in.

THE PIVOT PINS, SHOULD MOVE FREELY IN THEIR SLEEVES. WHEN THE PINS AND SLEEVES GET WORN, YOUR BLADE GETS SLOPPY. MUCH OF THE "PLAY" IN PLOWS, CAN BE FOUND HERE. SOME OF THE NEW SMALLER PLOWS, HAVE BOLTS WITH GREASE FITTINGS ON THEIR HEADS. I'M NOT TOO FOND OF THIS DESIGN. HOW STRONG CAN A HOLLOW BOLT BE? MY PIVOT PINS ARE 1" DIAMETER. THE BOLTS ARE A LOT SMALLER THAN THAT.

THIS IS THE SOLENOID THAT CONTROLS THE PLOW PUMP MOTOR. THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS SHOULD BE KEPT CLEAN. SOME OF THESE COME NEW WITH COPPER NUTS. IF I GET ONE WITH STEEL NUTS, I REPLACE THEM WITH BRASS NUTS RIGHT AWAY. BE SURE TO USE TOOTH WASHERS TOO.

WHEN YOU SPEND HOURS PLOWING SNOW, YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO REACH FAR FOR ANYTHING. I SET UP THE IMPORTANT THINGS, TO BE EASILY REACHED BY THE DRIVER.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER CHEVY OR GMC, WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING, THAT HAS THE PLOW CONTROLS WHERE MINE ARE. MOST MOUNT THEM NEXT TO THE EMERGENCY BRAKE RELEASE. WITH MY SET UP, I ONLY NEED MY RIGHT HAND TO SHIFT GEARS AND WORK THE PLOW. REMOVE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL, TAKE A HACK SAW, AND CUT A CORNER OFF THE "CUBBY BOX". MAKING SURE THE HOLE YOU CREATE, WILL ALLOW THE PLOW CONTROL WIRE PLUGS TO PASS THROUGH. MARK AND DRILL THE MOUNTING HOLES FOR THE SWITCHES. (I USED 3/16" FOR 3/16" RIVETS) FEED THE WIRE THROUGH, CONNECT THE PLUGS, THEN RIVET THE SWITCHES IN PLACE WITH A "BLIND RIVETER"
MUCH EASIER NOW !
HERE IS MY BROTHER'S 95 DODGE RAM. AGAIN, EVERYTHING CAN BE REACHED WITH HIS RIGHT HAND. YOU SEE THE TOUCH PAD, THE YELLOW ROOF LIGHT POWER PLUG IN THE CIG LIGHTER SOCKET, AND THE 4WD SHIFTER. IN FRONT OF THE SHIFTER, IS THE CONTROL FOR THE MEYER TAILGATE SALT SPREADER. IN THE UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE PIC, YOU CAN SEE AN ACCESSORY OUTLET. ABOVE THE STEREO, AND THE TOUCH PAD, IS A FACTORY INSTALLED DRINK HOLDER
